New Media Laboratory
Poznan Supercomputing and Networking Center (PSNC) is a research center with an advanced New Media Laboratory dedicated to research and immersive content productions. Those productions are based on spatial and ambisonic sound. Our laboratory is equipped with a semi-spherical, 24-channel audio installation, used for experimental contet productions, based on surround sound and 360° video and VR. PSNC has been building its position for years as a center specializing in the newest video and sound processing technologies. New media specialist at the PSNC develop their competencies based on involvement on R&D projects at the national and European levels.
Origin of PSNC’s works in ambisonics and surround sound date back to 2016. Through our participation in the ImmersiaTV project, we began to specialize in creation of omnidirectional video content and immersive media, such as interactive streaming methods adaptable to the user requirements. As part of ImmersiaTV we did first experiments to adapt ambisonic sound in live broadcasts by use of binaural decoding technology. Subsequent activities were related to research conducted under the Immersify project. At that time, the New Media Laboratory developed advanced methods for ambisonic sound-based productions, while co-developing special software that allows playback of high-definition video content (8K, 16K) using High Order Ambisonic up to seventh order.
