Noise and Structure

Recording of an outdoor concert

We also made experimental ambisonic recordings in open space, on the roof of the CBPIO building of Poznań Supercomputing and Networking Center. Our production team recorded an instrumental composition by Jan Skorupa entitled “Noise and Structure” created for a string quintet with an additional electronic layer, presented in an eight-channel system.

Recordings were made in a mixed manner using both ambisonic soundfield and classic microphones. Through detailed recording of various acoustic plans and combining them with each other during the mixing process, a high-quality sound production with very high spatial detail was obtained. The recording was presented, among others, during the Ars Electronica 2019 Festival on a dedicated 24-channel multi-speaker installation.

Whole production was in sync with 360-degree video, made by using special camera rig built in the New Media Laboratory of PSNC. Panoramic view was recorded in 20K resolution and enabled post-production in 16K resolution.
